Why does my vehicle need an MOT test?

The purpose of the MOT test is to ensure the vehicle meets the minimum safety level required by law, every vehicle over three years old requires this annual legal requirement to guarantee your roadworthiness and safety. During the MOT test the nominated tester, a person authorised by the government body called VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) will conduct an inspection and a comprehensive series of checks around the vehicle, including the interior, exterior, under the bonnet and under the vehicle.

A valid MOT certificate is mandatory for every vehicle on the road, a test ensures that the vehicle is in roadworthy condition and meets the minimum environmental standards. Make sure that you book your MOT before your current MOT expires.

The result of each check is recorded, and if the vehicle passes a VT20 pass certificate is issued. If the vehicle fails to meet the required standard, a VT30 failure document is issued. Items that are not quite a failure are known as advisory items.

You can have your vehicle MOT tested up to 28 days in advance. The expiry date on your new MOT is 12 months from the expiry of your old one rather than 12 months from the day you took the test, so if your MOT test is due in the next 28 days, you won’t lose any days for having your vehicle tested early.
